In just a few minutes, we explore the people, places, events and ideas that have shaped our world. Here's today's story. [00:00:16] When was the first Human heart transplant? On December 3, 1967, South African surgeon Dr. Christian Barnard and his team made medical history at Groot Shore Hospital in Cape Town. The patient was 53 year old Louis Washkansky who was suffering from severe heart disease. His new heart came from 25 year old Denise Darvall, who had suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a car. The operation was groundbreaking. Doctors had demonstrated that a human heart could be removed from one person and successfully transplanted into another. Washkansky survived for 18 days before dying from pneumonia. One of the biggest challenges was suppressing his immune system enough to prevent prevent rejection without leaving him dangerously vulnerable to infection. Barnard's achievement also built upon years of pioneering heart transplant research by surgeons including Stanford's Dr. Norman Shumway. Today, heart transplantation is an established treatment for some patients with end stage heart failure and it all traces back to a remarkable medical milestone in December 1967.
